Kevin Maclean reviews Lady Gaga's third album, Art Pop
This Lady certainly knows how to make an entrance; who could forget her ‘egg’ vessel spectacle for the Grammy’s? ARTPOP, Lady Gaga’s third album, is no exception. The overall feel of the album is full of pop gloss colour, with a strong nod to Dubstep and synth-heavy Eurobeats that wouldn't go amiss in a hard-core Berlin S&M club. Each track is painted differently, offering uniqueness to each piece, whilst still maintaining an overall consistency in the full body of work – a testament to both Gaga’s musical intuition and intelligence. The Opening track 'Aura' launches with controversial references to Burka fashion, leading on to Gaga's eccentric and catchy self-produced number 'Venus', following with back-to-back future hits 'G.U.Y' and 'Sexxx Dreams'. ‘Mother Monster’ anticipates a genre-shift for the following songs, 'Jewels and Drugs' and new single 'Do What You Want' which nod to early 90's Hip Hop. The album continues to unfold one edgy pop song after the next with Dub-heavy 'Swine' being a personal favourite. 'Gypsy' is offered to us as the signature power ballad; a sensational ‘Edge of Glory’ 2.0. This leads us on to the curtain close with the album’s first single 'Applause'. Applause is truly in order for the Lady. This album pushes the glittering, meat covered, cruise liner of a boat out further than ever before. My final verdict? 5 stars and perhaps a Turner prize!
